They predicted how long they could keep their hand in the ice-cold water, first without any insulation and then with a layer of lard (to mimic blubber). The results showed that the "blubber" allowed them to keep their hand in the cold water much longer, demonstrating how blubber insulated and kept polar bears warm in Arctic conditions.
